J.D. is the narrator and main character — he provides the overall narration in the show with the voice-overs linking the two to three story arcs in each episode. He is a geek, but affably so and nonetheless has romantic liaisons with some attractive women, although he suffered from a "dry spell" for most of the third season. During the show's fifth season, he celebrated his 30th birthday; it has also been revealed that his was a premature birth.
